[OK] July 2011 - Vol 8, No 7

We aren’t talking about a bit of hog or even part of a hog - we’re talking whole hog and the fine folks in Eufaula know how to do it right.
The 27th Annual Whole Hawg Days Festival and Poker Run will be held on July 28-30, in Eufaula and has been touted as one of the finest festivals in Oklahoma.
The event is sponsored by the Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce, and promises lots of fun for the entire family. A rodeo and carnival will run for all three days of the festival. The rodeo will be held at the fairgrounds and the carnival will be held at Posey Park. Other events are: Whole Hawg Days Parade, Friday at 6 p.m.; a car show Saturday and arts and crafts show and food vendors Friday and Saturday at Posey Park; and the Whole Hawg Cook Off on Saturday.
“This is one of the largest festivals that Oklahoma has,” said Jimmie Phelan, Director of the Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce. “I think that what makes our festival unique is that it is very family oriented.”
“We will kick off the festival Thursday with a carnival at 5 p.m. and the rodeo at 8 p.m.” Phelan also added, “The downtown parade will start at 6 p.m. and we will be judging the parade. The Parade Marshall this year is Eufaula vice-Mayor Greg Anderson.”
One of the main attractions of the festival is The Hawg Cook-off on Saturday.
“We expect approximately 25-30 entries in this year’s Hawg Cook-off,” said Phelan. “The contest is open to anybody who wants to come to town, buy a hog and cook it.”
With the bragging rights and the first place prize money, you can bet that at the 3 p.m. prize judging, contestants will be giving it their best shot.  This promises to be oh-so-good for the rest of us - because at 5 p.m.  everybody can get a free Hawg sandwich from the “plethora of pork” that will be cooked.
The Jokers Wild Whole Hawg Run is entering its 11th year at the festival and continues to be a hugely popular event. Contestants pay an entry fee of $200 and travel by boat to five different marinas on Lake Eufaula. The expected first place payout is $20,000 based upon 500 entries.  The theme for this year’s poker run is “Boats, Bikers and Babes.”
Registration for the poker run ends at noon on Saturday, July 30. Pre-registration ends July 29.

The Arts and Crafts festival begins at 4 p.m. Friday and at 8 a.m. Saturday at Posey Park. McAlester resident Carrie Patrick has been attending the Whole Hawg Festival for many years as a vendor. “We have always had a great response when we sell our gourmet products at this festival. It is just such a popular event,” Patrick said.
“The Whole Hawg Festival brings a lot of activities to Lake Eufaula other than just the lake. It has always been a busy festival with everyone smoking the pork and then giving away the pork sandwiches. My family really enjoyed the Pow-Wows and seeing the beautiful motorcycles that have come from all over the area. Being a vendor at these festivals you come to know your fellow vendors and you feel like you know them before you leave, thus waiting the next year to see them again.”
Get your taste buds ready and make a trip to Eufaula during Whole Hawg Days.  It’s guaranteed your family will enjoy good times and some mighty fine swine.
